Wilhelm Kauermann (born July 21, 1898 in Bochum-Langendreer , † November 18, 1973 in Castrop-Rauxel ) was a German politician ( SPD ).

Life and work

Life

Wilhelm Kauermann was born as the son of a miner in Bochum-Langendreer and initially worked as a commercial clerk in a book printing company with a newspaper publisher in Bochum. At the age of 18 he was drafted as a soldier in 1916 and took part in the First World War. After the end of the war he first worked as a miner in Bochum-Werne and in 1921 found a job with the miners' association in Bochum, where from 1928 he was in charge of asset management for the book printing company. Kauermann has been politically and unionized since his youth and lost his job after the dissolution of the unions in May 1933 (→ Gleichschaltung ) by the National Socialists .

After a period of unemployment, he ran a stationery shop in Ickern, a district of Castrop-Rauxel, from 1936 until the outbreak of war in 1939. In 1939 Kauermann was drafted again for military service and worked as a non-commissioned officer in a medical unit until the end of the war. He returned to Castrop-Rauxel in 1945 and resumed his political engagement, which had been interrupted in 1933. He became chairman of the Ickern local association of the SPD and was temporarily also 2nd and later 1st chairman of the booth association of the party. For the IG Bergbau , he also worked 1948-1963 as managing director for asset management.

Wilhelm Kauermann was married to Änne Kauermann (née Kollmann, * July 21, 1902, † March 11, 1988) and has a son, Hans Kauermann, and three grandchildren, Kerstin, Silke and Göran Kauermann .

Public offices

After the war, Kauermann was a member of the Castrop-Rauxel city council from October 1946 and was elected mayor on October 31, 1946. Kauermann then served as Lord Mayor of the city of Castrop-Rauxel for 23 years from 1948 to May 31, 1971 and was thus the senior mayor in North Rhine-Westphalia when he resigned for health reasons . His political focus during this time was the promotion of sport, youth work, the promotion of education and the expansion of European town twinning .
