Leopoldo Fleming
Leopoldo F. Fleming (born September 16, 1939 in Puerta de Tierra , Puerto Rico ) is an American jazz musician ( percussion , composition, arrangement).
Live and act
Fleming, who came from a family of musicians, grew up first in Puerto Rico, from 1947 on Saint Thomas and from 1951 in New York City . As a child he played congas ; his father taught him Latin American rhythms. At the age of 15 he accompanied dancers as a percussionist. Shortly thereafter, he played in a Latin big band led by Red Dixon and Jesse DeVore.
In 1965, Hugh Masekela brought him into the accompanying trio of Miriam Makeba , in which he worked until the mid-1970s. He toured internationally with Makeba and was also involved in albums such as Click Song and Pata Pata . Since 1971 he has also been part of Nina Simone's band , with whom he worked until the 1980s. He also worked as a theater musician. He was the musical director of LeRoi Jones ' Slaveship in Brooklyn; in this production by Gilbert Moses he appeared with Archie Shepp . He also composed for the American children's television series Vegetable Soup .
Between 1987 and 1998 he worked from Vienna, among others with Jim Pepper , Paul Zauner and Elly Wright ; since 2006 he has also lived in Copenhagen. Fleming plays his own compositions with his Afro-Caribbean Jazz Ensemble , which he did in New York with Karen Joseph (fl), Dinah Vero (p), Bryce Sebastien (b) and Emilio Valdés (dr, Timbales ) and in Copenhagen initially with Ben Beasikov (p), Kaare Munholm (vib), Yassér Morejón (b) and Jonas Johansen (Timbales); In 2016 he performed in Copenhagen with Ben Besiakov , Morten Grønvad (mallets, key), Yasser Pino (b) and Tony Moreaux (perc). Together with saxophonist Christian Gonsior, he released the album Trato común in 2012 . Tom Lord lists 23 recordings with Fleming between 1966 and 2015.
He can also be heard on recordings by Twins Seven Seven , Zé Carlos , Lonnie Liston Smith , Sonny Stitt , Dick Griffin and Jim Pepper / Amina Claudine Myers .
