Wilhelm Runze (born June 4, 1887 in Frankfurt am Main , † November 6, 1972 ibid) was a German painter.

life and work

Runze attended the Städelschule in Frankfurt , where he was a student of WA Beer, and then studied with Otto Seitz at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . He also continued his studies at the Colarossi Academy in Paris. Wilhelm Runze was initially a supporter of Romanticism , which was particularly evident in his landscape paintings in the period before 1920. Finally he changed his style to expressionism , but without falling into extremes.

Wilhelm Runze portrayed the mayors of Frankfurt, Ludwig Landmann and Walter Kolb , among others . Both portraits hang in the foyer in front of the council chamber in Frankfurt's Römer town hall . Very often he depicted the former Schirn and the Fahrtor in Frankfurt . His grave is in the Frankfurt-Sossenheim cemetery . In 2014, the Frankfurt-Sossenheim cultural and support group took over the care of the grave.
