Wilhelm Schneemelcher Sr.

Wilhelm Christoph Robert August Schneemelcher (born June 14, 1872 in Berlin ; † October 20, 1928 there ) was a German Protestant theologian.

Life

After studying Protestant theology at the universities of Berlin (especially with Adolf von Harnack ) and Marburg , Schneemelcher received his doctorate in Berlin in 1897 and passed his first theological examination in 1898. In 1902 he was in Berlin Cathedral ordained . He then became pastor at the large Friedrichs orphanage in Berlin-Rummelsburg , and in 1906 also head of education. In 1914 he moved to a parish in the Dorotheenstädtische community in Berlin.

In 1902, Schneemelcher was elected General Secretary of the Evangelical Social Congress (ESK) and held this office part-time until 1923. He published the monthly Evangelisch-Sozial in which he published many articles. In 1917 he took part in the founding of the “ People's League for Freedom and Fatherland ” and was a member of its work council.

His son of the same name, Wilhelm Schneemelcher, was also a Protestant theologian and became a professor in Bonn.
