Wilhelm Schoof (born June 18, 1876 in Homberg (Efze) , † May 16, 1975 in Willingshausen ) was a German German philologist and senior director in Bad Hersfeld .

Life

Schoof studied and obtained his doctorate at the University of Marburg . His academic teachers were Edward Schröder , Ferdinand Wrede and Albert Köster . From 1908 he was director of the Luisenschule, a girls' school in Bad Hersfeld. He founded the Hersfeld history association, the local history museum and was active as a local researcher in numerous regional historical associations. Schoof was editor of the home magazine Hessenland and member of the historical commission for Hessen and Waldeck. His meticulously researched scientific essays and editions of letters on the Brothers Grimm became important . His publications in the years 1933 to 1945 are viewed critically in view of their proximity to ethnic-National Socialist ideas.

The Senate of the Philipps University of Marburg expressly disapproves of Schoof's work during the Nazi era.

Wilhelm Schoof lived in Willingshausen.

Awards

On June 28, 1952, he was made honorary senator of the University of Marburg on the occasion of the 425th anniversary for his services to Grimm research and to Hessian folklore and naming. In 1954 he was appointed honorary president of the Schillerbund. He was also an honorary member of the Schwalm Heimatbund and the Association for Hessian History and Regional Studies . In Willingshausen a street was named after Wilhelm Schoof.
