Ampanihy or Ampanihy Ouest ( place of the bats ) is a municipality ( commune ) and capital of the district of the same name in the Atsimo-Andrefana region in southern Madagascar . In 2006 it had about 25,000 inhabitants who lived in 24 villages ( Fokontany ) on about 1397 km². Androka is located about 227 km south of the city of Toliara on the RN10 national road and the Sakatovo river .

The establishment of the place in 1900 goes back to King Etsiamponde and the French military administration. In 1907, the administration of the cercle des Mahafaly was transferred from Androka to Ampanihy, because the area around Ampanihy was where most of the Mahafaly leaders resided.

The people of Androka live mainly from cattle breeding, the cultivation of cassava , corn , sweet potatoes , peanuts , cowpeas , lentils and Bambara peanuts . The mohair carpets from Ampanihy have been known throughout Madagascar since the first mohair fair was held in 1934. Even today there is a mohair house in the center of Ampanihy . There are also some garnet deposits.

Ampanihy has an airfield with a 1,100-meter runway.
