Androka , roughly where the river washes the dead trees , is a community ( commune ) in the Atsimo-Andrefana region in southern Madagascar . In 2006 it had about 26,000 inhabitants who lived in 24 villages ( Fokontany ) on about 1600 km². Androka is located about 200 km south of the city of Toliara and a few kilometers above the mouth of the Linta River into the sea.

Until 1969, the center of the community was under the name Ankilitelo in the mangroves at the Linta estuary. This place was abandoned in 1969 as a result of a cyclone and is now known as Old Androka (Androka Taloha or Androka Ela).

Androka's population is largely Mahafaly . In 1902 Androka was designated the center of an administrative unit called the circle of Mahafaly ( cercle des mahafaly ), but it lost this status to Ampanihy in 1907 . Today the people in Androka live mainly from fishing, cattle breeding and the cultivation of cassava , corn and sweet potatoes .
