Wilhelm Schröter , called Winterschröter , also Wilhelm Schroeter (born February 24, 1849 in Dessau , † January 14, 1904 in Karlsruhe ), was a German landscape painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Schröter received his first artistic training at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . There he attended Oswald Achenbach's landscape class in 1867/1868 . Then he switched to the Grand Ducal Badische Kunstschule Karlsruhe until 1871 , where he studied with Carl Friedrich Lessing and Hans Fredrik Gude . In 1871 he returned to Düsseldorf, where he settled as a freelance painter and specialized in the representation of winter landscapes, which earned him the nickname Winterschröter . Schröter spent the years 1886 to 1888 in the United States , where he was involved in the manufacture of cycloramen on behalf of the American Panorama Company (later Lohr and Heine Panorama Company ) in Wisconsin . With twenty other painters, including Otto von Ernst , Friedrich Wilhelm Heine , August Löhr (1843–1919), Bernhard Schneider , Gustav Wendling and Paul Wilhelmi , he created the panoramas Storming of Missionary Ridge / Battle of Chattanooga , Battle of Atlanta and on large screens Jerusalem on the Day of the Crucifixion . He then returned to Germany to study painting in Karlsruhe in 1889/1890. Later he became a professor of painting at the Grand Ducal Baden Art School. Like his wife Elisabeth († 1947) and his sons Hans († 1962) and Erik Wilhelm († 1972, also a painter), he was buried in the main cemetery in Karlsruhe .
