Wilhelm Theodor Streuber

Wilhelm Theodor Streuber (born March 31, 1816 in Burgdorf ; † October 5, 1857 ibid) was a Swiss theologian , classical philologist , journalist and author .

Life

Wilhelm Theodor Streuber, son of a pharmacist, studied classical philology and theology in Basel from 1835–1839 . In 1839 he received his doctorate and ordained. Further studies at the universities of Heidelberg , Bonn and especially Berlin followed from 1839–1841 . From 1841 he worked as a private lecturer and from 1851 as an associate professor for classical philology at the University of Basel. He was also active as a writer and journalist. 1847–1856 he was editor of the conservative “Basler Zeitung”. In 1850 he founded the “ Basler Taschenbuch ”, which he published until 1857.

Streuber published numerous writings, some of which were intended for specialist colleagues and some for a wider audience. This includes philological and antiquarian treatises on antiquity and works on Swiss history with a focus on Basel.
