Wilhelm Toosbüy

Wilhelm Toosbüy (born March 1, 1831 in Eckernförde ; † September 19, 1898 in Flensburg ) was a lawyer and city council secretary who held the mayor's office of Sønderborg from 1865 to 1868 and was mayor and lord mayor of the city of Flensburg from 1868 to 1898 . During his tenure, the population of Flensburg grew from 22,000 to 44,000, thus doubling.

Career

In 1865, the lawyer and city council secretary Wilhelm Toosbüy was appointed mayor of the city of Sønderborg . Toosbüy was constituted as mayor of the city of Flensburg on October 12, 1868. On January 25, 1870, the city council elected him mayor for life with 363 of 364 votes, which King Wilhelm I confirmed on March 5, 1870. Toosbüy took an oath on May 14th. On September 8, 1875, he was awarded the title of " Lord Mayor ". On the occasion of Kaiser Wilhelm II's visit to Flensburg in 1890, Toosbüy was appointed a secret councilor. According to his own account, he had the "high point of his life" on October 23, 1893, when he celebrated his 25th anniversary in office. On July 1, 1896, he was given the right to wear the golden chain of office .

Honors

Two years after his death, the city of Flensburg decided on August 31, 1900 to name the connecting road between Norderstrasse and Burgplatz after him ( Toosbüystrasse - Lage ).
