history

Name of the place

The name Burgplatz , first named in this way in 1882, is reminiscent of Duburg , a former hilltop castle from the 15th century, the last stone remains of which were removed around 1900. During the time of the Third Reich , from 1933 until the day of the surrender on May 8, 1945 , the area was called Schlageterplatz , named after Albert Leo Schlageter , a militant activist who had been martyred by National Socialist propaganda.

Monument on the watch

From the ceremonial unveiling on June 13, 1926 to its removal in 1974, when the lanes of the square were enlarged, the controversial war memorial Auf der Wacht , popularly known as the Seated Warrior , stood on Burgplatz . Its creator, the Flensburg sculptor Andreas Treede so wanted to in the First World War fallen soldiers of the Fusiliers "Queen" (Schleswig-Holstein) No. 86 remember a garrison, from the 1870s in the Duburg barracks was stationed . During the Third Reich, the monument on Burgplatz was the meeting place for Nazi formations. After the war, Der Spiegel reported in April 1967 that there were paint smears. The memorial, which was moved to the Duburg barracks in 1974 - after the barracks were demolished (1989/90) and the new employment office on Waldstrasse was built - was dismantled and stored on the grounds of the Werkkunstschule at the Schützenkuhle. Remnants of the memorial were moved to the Munketoft in the municipal building yard in 2006 , where, according to the head of the Flensburg City Archives Broder Schwensen, it has since been lost.

Buildings and facilities

Traffic islands

In 2006, residents beautified the square with a nostalgic Persil watch

In the middle of the Burgplatz there are several traffic islands , the largest of which has an old tree population under which a memorial stone with the inscription 1848 - March 24, 1898 commemorates the beginning of the first Schleswig-Holstein War (1848-1851) . On the second largest initiated residents or the working group Duburg the installation of a nostalgic Persil clock and were supported by the Beautification Association Flensburg . The timepiece set up in May 2006 is a replica of the Persil clock invented by the painter Kurt Heiligenstaedt in 1922 , on which his girlfriend Eva Muchow is depicted as an advertising medium for the Henkel company .

North edge

As in the entire district, the northern edge of the square is characterized by two to four-story workers' and rental houses built between 1880 and 1914, some of which are in need of renovation. Nevertheless, from May to the end of 2014, the city had Toosbüystraße , an access road coming from the city center, renovated for 1.5 million euros. The so far known for its reputation "cookie" at the upper end of the "Prachtstraße" (Burgplatz corner Toosbüystraße / Burgstraße) appears in new splendor after the urban development project and offers two play equipment and seating elements made of plastic. Before that, to the annoyance of the residents, the local alcoholic scene met there . For years, that audible group consumed alcoholic beverages to a considerable extent at a telephone booth that had meanwhile been removed and at a relocated switch box of the Stadtwerke Flensburg .

In addition to a drugstore with a bakery on the corner of Burgstrasse, the Döner -Bistro Troja on the corner of Bergstrasse and other, including occasionally empty shops in the area, there has also been an initiative center on the northern edge since August 2013, in which the Flensburg local groups from General German Bicycle Club (ADFC), Amnesty International and Greenpeace as well as the Federation for Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND) and the Nature Conservation Union Germany (NABU) share an office.

East and south

At the beginning of Knuthstrasse, in the east, the Nesthäkchen kiosk competes with the kiosk on Burgplatz and the facilities of the deaconess hospital (Diako for short) border on the southern edge . Closest to the square are the Clinic for Psychiatry , Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy , which treats up to 2,800 inpatients every year. There on the roof, a helicopter landing pad recorded a total of 527 take-offs by rescue helicopters that were in use for the supra-regional trauma center . In March 2013, a movement therapy, a midwifery practice and a practice for occupational therapy moved into the newly opened Wackerhaus next door . The Ergotherapiepraxis the Diako returned after 14 years in the Old Post Office back to Diako.

west

In the west, where the upper part of Duburger Strasse touches the square, opposite a subway restaurant is the Flensburg tax office , which was built in 1923/1924 and is responsible for the area of the former Flensburg-Land district (Duburger Strasse 58-64). Next door, the Nord-Ostsee Sparkasse (Nospa) has a so-called unmanned self-service branch. A few steps away, the Flensburger Sparkasse and later Nospa ran the Duburg branch with four employees from 1934 to 2010. Since 2015, the Verein Brücke eV Flensburg, which has been working for mentally ill people since 1980, has maintained a meeting place for people who live in the Duburg district at Dorotheenstrasse 2 . Opposite, a bakery opened in 1992 , which was converted into living space in 2014.

traffic

The stops at Burgplatz are served by several bus routes: from the AFAG line 3 between P + R Nordkreuz and Solitüde , from line 4 between Fröslee and Campus / Universität Flensburg and from the night bus N1 to and from the Flensburg central bus station .
