Wilhelm Treibs

Wilhelm Treibs (born November 6, 1890 in Oberstein (Nahe) , † April 20, 1978 in Heidelberg ) was a German chemist . He received his doctorate from the University of Göttingen . His doctoral supervisor was Otto Wallach . Until 1961 he taught and researched at the University of Leipzig . On the occasion of the university's 550th anniversary, he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver in 1959 . In 1960 he was honored as an outstanding scientist of the people , then defamed as a traitor when he did not return to the GDR from a visit to the Federal Republic after the building of the wall . Then he was a professor at the University of Heidelberg .

Treibs is known for his work on azulene .

In 1959 he became a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . Since 1955 he was a member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences .
