Wilhelm Wagner (geologist)

Wilhelm Heinrich Martin Wagner (born August 1, 1884 in Strasbourg , † November 21, 1970 in Darmstadt ) was a German geologist .

Life

Wagner was born in Strasbourg in 1884 as the son of the Protestant railway company secretary Ludwig Anton Wagner and his Protestant wife Henriette Luise Wagner, née Gravenhorst. After completing his Abitur, Wilhelm Wagner devoted himself to studying at the University of Strasbourg and at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , which he obtained in 1908 with the academic degree of Dr. rer. nat. completed. During his studies in 1906 he became a member of the Schwarzburgbund - Association of Burschenschaft Rheno-Germania Bonn . As a result, from 1909 he held an assistant position at the Geological State Institute of Alsace-Lorraine , and in 1917 he was appointed regional geologist. In 1922 he took over the position of state geologist in Hesse, and in 1924 he completed his habilitation at the Technical University of Darmstadt for geology.

In 1934 he was appointed to the chair of geology and technical rock science, succeeding Alexander Steuer , which he held until his retirement in 1954. At the same time he also acted as director of the geological and mineralogical department of the Hessian State Museum .

During his time in Darmstadt, Wagner was a member of the National Socialist German Lecturer Association (NSDDB).
