Wilhelm Wolters (born July 15, 1855 in Bremen , † December 15, 1918 in Honolulu ) was a German merchant and patron .

biography

Wolters was the son of a worker. He learned the trade of a businessman. At the end of the 1870s he became a representative in Hawaii for the sugar merchant Heinrich Hackfeld's company . Soon afterwards he started his own business in the sugar trade. He made a great fortune. He also created a large collection of stamps. He bequeathed his fortune to the Hanseatic City of Bremen. Relatives challenged the will . The US government sold the stamp collection. In a 1928 settlement , a considerable fortune fell to Bremen. The city formed a foundation called the Wilhelm Wolters Foundation , which was supposed to serve scientific, educational and artistic purposes. During the Nazi era , the foundation was misused for political purposes.

In 1928 the deceased was transferred to Bremen in accordance with the provisions of the will and buried in the Waller Friedhof .
