Johann Wilhelm Carl Theodor von der Marck (born February 15, 1815 in Hamm ; † November 20, 1900 there ) was a German pharmacist , botanist and geologist .

On February 15, 1815, Wilhelm von der Marck was born in Hamm as the son of the innkeeper Johann Daniel von der Marck (1784–1837) and Antoinette Sophie Christine Pröpsting. From 1824 to 1830 he attended the Hammonense grammar school . He initially worked as a pharmacist in the Rhineland, but from 1840 in Lüdenscheid , where he became a city councilor in 1848 and gathered materials for a city chronicle. In 1840 he married Josefine Friederike Luise Uhlendorff (1818–1861), a daughter of the pharmacist Friedrich Uhlendorff, in Hamm. From 1851 he ran the unicorn pharmacy in Hamm, which his father-in-law had taken over, but sold it in 1864 in order to devote himself entirely to science and local politics. From 1852 to 1893 he held the honorary post of First Alderman, ie the Deputy Mayor. He also co-founded the Scientific Association in Hamm in 1852, and became its chairman in 1864. In 1858 he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. He was active in the museum association and in the AG Bad Hamm . His paleontological research has given him a good reputation far beyond Hamm. On November 20, 1900, Dr. Wilhelm von der Marck. His grave is still in the Ostenfriedhof today . The Von-der-Marck-Strasse in the south of Hammer and in Lüdenscheid are named after Wilhelm von der Marck.

Awards

In 1877 his hometown Hamm granted him honorary citizenship .
