Wilhelm Alfred von und zu Liechtenstein (born May 29, 1922 at Schloss Frauenthal near Deutschlandsberg in Styria ; † November 27, 2006 ) was the Prince Grand Prior of the Grand Priory of Austria of the Sovereign Knights of Malta from 1990 until his death .

family

Wilhelm came from the marriage of Karl Aloys von und zu Liechtenstein (1878–1955) and Elisabeth Fürstin von Urach Countess of Württemberg (1894–1962), daughter of Duke Wilhelm Karl von Württemberg-Urach , as king in Lithuania Mindaugas II. (1864– 1928). He was the cousin of Franz Josef II. He married Emma Baronesse von Gutmannsthal-Benvenuti (1926–1984); there are five children from the marriage.

By resolution of September 21, 1950, Wilhelm renounced the name and title of a Prince of Liechtenstein and all rights associated with it. He was then awarded the title of Count von Hohenau by Franz Josef II von und zu Liechtenstein .

Life

He studied at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna and graduated as a forest engineer . He was active in various management positions in the wood industry; In 1982 he retired. He died after a long and serious illness.

Act

In 1986 he was accepted into the Order of Malta and was most recently Profess-Ehren- and Devotions-Großkreuz-Bailli. In 1990 he took his oath of office as Prince Grand Prior of the Grand Priory of Austria. He was re-elected twice. He was committed to new members, but especially to the relief organizations of the order such as the Malteser Hospitaldienst Austria. Four other charitable organizations (Haus Malta nursing home, Malteser Alten- und Krankendienst, Aktion St. Lukas and Aids-Dienst Malteser) were founded during his term of office, the Romanian Aid was promoted and the Johannesgemeinschaft was brought into being. Today around 2,000 volunteers and order members work in the works of the order. In addition, he made significant efforts to maintain the eight Maltese churches in Austria, the private elementary school in Mailberg and the business operations.
