history

The Wilhelmsburg was built at the Reiherstieg shipyard under the direction of Joachim Eduard von Somm and was launched there in 1853 with construction number 6. The owner was the trading house Joh. Ces. Godeffroy & son of the Hamburg businessman Johan Cesar Godeffroy . The ship was named after the municipality of Wilhelmsburg in what was then the Kingdom of Hanover .

The sailing ship was used to transport emigrants from Hamburg to Australia and South Africa . On the night of December 3rd to 4th, 1863, the Wilhelmsburg stranded in a storm near Terschelling . The majority of the people on board were killed.
