The Nýřany – Heřmanova Huť railway is a regional railway connection in the Czech Republic that was originally built and operated by the Prague Iron Industry Company as the “Wilkischner Montanbahn ”. It runs in western Bohemia from Nýřany ( Nürschan ) to Heřmanova Huť ( Hermannshütte ).

According to a decree of the Czech government, the line has been classified as a regional railway ("regionální dráha") since December 20, 1995.

history

The history of the railway line is inextricably linked with the former Hermannshütte , an ironworks founded in 1854 by Hermann Dietrich Lindheim . In order to improve the transport conditions for the products manufactured there, the Prager Eisenindustrie-Gesellschaft built a standard-gauge industrial railway around 1890. Nürschan was chosen as the starting point, as the Concordia shaft near Blatnic, Franzschacht near Weltana (Kbelany) and Rudolfsschacht near Wilkischen (Vlkyš) could also be connected directly. In addition, another private mining railway began in Nürschan, which led to the Pilsen – Eisenstein line (Plzeň – Železná Ruda).

In 1904, the Prague Iron Industry Society closed the now outdated Hermannshütte. Hard coal production in the railway area also declined more and more due to the exhaustion of stocks. The route, which had become unprofitable as a result, became the property of the state on April 1, 1905. The operator was now the kk Staatsbahnen (kkStB). From 1907 a glass factory was producing on the former smelter site, which again ensured a constant volume of traffic.

After the First World War , the line became the property of the newly founded Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD). The ČSD also started travel on September 1, 1920. In the 1921 timetable there are two pairs of trains that took up to an hour to complete the entire route. Later a third pair of trains was added.

After the Sudetenland was annexed to Germany in October 1938, the railway area was entirely on German territory. The current Protectorate Railways Bohemia and Moravia (BMB-ČMD) remained the operator . The route was initially included in the Reich curriculum under the number 422v, later under the number 422n. In the years 1939–42, there was only one producing coal mine in the railway area, the Karolischacht in Wilkischen. After the end of World War II , the line came back to the ČSD.

On January 1, 1993, the line was transferred to the newly founded České dráhy (ČD) in the course of the dissolution of Czechoslovakia . Since 2003 it has been part of the network of the state infrastructure operator Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC).

In 2011, the timetable recorded a total of twelve pairs of passenger trains on workdays, which, with a gap in the morning, formed almost an hourly service . On Sundays, however, there was only a limited timetable with five pairs of trains. The travel time was 16 minutes in both directions. Freight traffic is still provided for the glassworks at the end of the route.

In connection with the fundamental renovation and electrification of the Plzeň – Domažlice – state border line , a modernization of the Nýřany – Heřmanova Huť line is planned from 2022. In addition to the renewal of tracks and systems, the line is also to be electrified. It is planned to connect the regional trains on the Heřmanova Huť – Plzeň – Nepomuk route.

Vehicle use

The Prague iron industry company procured three used locomotives with the names STEINAUJEZD , WILKISCHEN and HERMANNSHÜTTE as well as a total of 52 freight cars for the Montanbahn . With these vehicles all traffic was handled until the nationalization.

Until recently, ČD used the tried and tested two-axle railcars of the 810 series in tourist traffic . For some time now, trains from the ČD series 814 (“RegioNova”) have been running exclusively .
