Will Insley (born October 15, 1929 in Indianapolis , † August 12, 2011 in New York City ) was an American painter , architect and planner of utopian city ​​models. As a painter of geometric abstraction , he was known for his large-scale geometric picture elements.

life and work

William Francis Insley studied at Amherst College in Massachusetts . He also had his first solo exhibition there. In 1955 he received his Masters of Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design .

Since 1965, Insley has been developing wall fragments for rooms in utopian cities that should correspond to a better human way of thinking and acting: The Interior Building - the inner building that people are supposed to build outwards. This utopia was his central work: the Onecity in the middle of the USA with 160,000 square miles of built-up area for the entire population. He created plans, elevations, wall fragments and models that are systematically structured.

Since 1966 he was visiting lecturer at various colleges and universities. Since 1969 he has taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

Will Insley took part in Documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972 in the Individual Mythologies department and also at Documenta with a model, an isometric drawing and pencil drawing for " Gate - First Stage of the Interior Building " and " The Interior Building - Overall Plan " 6 represented as an artist in 1977.

He received the National Foundation on Arts and Humanities Prize and a Guggenheim Fellowship . Insley last lived in New York City . After his death in 2011, his artistic legacy will be administered by the Westwood Gallery in New York.
