Willard J. Turnbull

Willard J. Turnbull also Willard Jay Turnbull (born March 19, 1903 in Burchard , Pawnee County , Nebraska , † September 28, 1997 ) was an American civil engineer ( geotechnical engineering ).

Turnbull graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1925. He was in the testing laboratory of the University of Nebraska and the Nebraska Highway, worked for the Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District and the US geodetic service (US Coast and Geodetic Survey) in the Philippines (1926/27). He was mainly engaged in soil mechanical investigations for road and dam construction, for example on the Platte River . In 1941 he became head of the dam construction and foundations department at the Waterways Experimental Station (WES) of the US Army Corps of Engineers in Vicksburg and then the soil mechanics department. In 1969 he retired.

In 1968 he received the Terzaghi Award .
