Willard Van der Veer
Willard Van der Veer (born August 23, 1894 in Brooklyn , New York City , † June 16, 1963 in Encino , California ) was an American cinematographer . At the Academy Awards in November 1930 , he received the Oscar for best camera .
biography
Together with Joseph T. Rucker Van der Veer accompanied in the years 1928-1930, the first Antarctic expedition of Richard E. Byrd for more than a year in the Antarctic . The documentary film Mit Byrd zum Südpol was made from the film recordings there , for which Van der Veer and Rucker received an Academy Award in 1930. In the 10-minute documentary short film Three on a Rope (1938) about climbing Tahquitz Rock in the San Jacinto Mountains of Southern California , he was not only a cameraman, but also a director and screenwriter.
He was also cinematographer on the documentary Giant 'Stars Are Off to Texas (1955), of a meeting of the actors and the film crew of giants of George Stevens shows, and most recently in the sci-fi - horror film The Crawling Hand (1963) by Herbert L. Strock . In the early 1960s he was also camera director on episodes of the television series Maverick . According to him, which is Mount Van der Veer in the West Antarctic Marie Byrd Land named.
