Willem Adriaan (Adriaen) van der Stel (* 1664 Amsterdam ; † 1723 ibid) was governor of the Cape Colony from January 23, 1699 to 1707 .

He accompanied his father to the Cape region at the age of 15 . There he started his first job as a treasurer at VOC . Van der Stel later took over the governor's post on the Cape from his father. During this time his interest in agriculture developed . That is why he founded a great estate in Vergere .

His wide-ranging activities also aroused resistance and resentment. Thus in 1705 63 local immigrants petitioned Dutch authorities against his work. The conflict slipped away from him and he had some spokesmen locked up. Later on, Van der Stel was called back to Holland to investigate the events, in the course of which his position developed unfavorably. He lost his estate in Vergere and retired from the service of the VOC.

Van der Stel was the eldest son of Simon van der Stel (1639-1712) and Johanna Jacoba Six (1645-1700). His paternal grandfather was Adriaan van der Stel , who served as governor of Mauritius .
