Willem Janszoon Blaeu (* 1571 in Alkmaar or Uitgeest , Netherlands , † 1638 in Amsterdam ; also Guilielmus Janssonius Caesius, Guiljelmus Blaeuw, Willem Jansz, Willems Jans Zoon, Guilielmus or G. Blaeu ) was a Dutch cartographer and publisher .

Life

Blaeu was possibly born in Uitgeest near Alkmaar in 1571. From 1594 to 1596 he learned astronomy and cartography from Tycho Brahe . In 1600 he discovered the variable star P Cygni . Around 1603 he settled in Amsterdam, where he began to make earth globes . Soon he was also producing maps and sea maps, including a world map in 1605.

In 1629 he was able to acquire numerous printing plates from the estate of Jodocus Hondius . These served him to publish his own atlas. Of the initial 60 cards, 37 came from the Hondius estate. The name Hondius has been replaced by Blaeu on all printing plates.

In 1633 he was appointed kaartenmaker van de Republiek , and he became the official cartographer for the Dutch East India Company (VOC). He created an extensive set of maps and also published works by Willebrord van Roijen Snell (Snellius), Adriaan Metius , Gerhard Johannes Vossius and Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft .

He died in Amsterdam in 1638.

His son Joan Blaeu (1596–1673) continued his business. After the workshop was destroyed in the Amsterdam fire of 1672 and Joan Blaeu's death in the following year, the publishing house founded by Willem Blaeu was finally closed in 1698.

Willem Janszoon Blaeu should not be confused with the Dutch navigator Willem Janszoon , who lived at the same time.
