Willem van Honthorst (* 1594 in Utrecht ; † February 19, 1666 , ibid) was a Dutch painter . He was the brother of Gerrit van Honthorst .

Life

Like his brother, Willem van Honthorst was also a student of Abraham Bloemaerts and his father, who was a decorative painter. Willem also learned a lot from his older brother. In 1643 Willem married his wife Sophia in The Hague , where he lived for a few years.

In 1646 he went to Berlin and became court painter at the electoral court of Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg and his wife Luise Henriette von Oranien , daughter of the Dutch governor Friedrich Heinrich von Oranien and Amalie zu Solms-Braunfels . He stayed in Berlin for seventeen years and did not return to Utrecht until 1664, where he died in 1666.

The painting styles of the two Honthorst brothers are very similar, so that some of Willem's pictures were assigned to his older brother Gerrit, also because of the similarity of the signatures. On closer inspection, however, it can be seen that Willem's pictures are somewhat more even and harmonious in their execution.
