Willem van der Vlugt

Willem van der Vlugt (born March 12, 1853 in Haarlem , † November 5, 1928 in Tongeren near Epe) was a Dutch legal scholar.

Life

Willem was born as the son of the banker Jan van der Vlugt (born September 30, 1823 in Haarlem; † March 18, 1889 in Haarlem) and his wife Jacoba Henriette Margaretha Hinlopen (born April 16, 1830 in Utrecht; † March 22, 1918 in Haarlem ) born. He attended the community school and high school in his native city. On September 26, 1870, he enrolled at the University of Leiden to study law. During this time Johannes Theodoor Buys in particular became his formative teacher. On September 25, 1879 he received his doctorate in law with the treatise De Rechtsstaat, volgens de leer van Rudolf Gneiss . Shortly thereafter, on October 9, 1879, he was appointed professor of legal philosophy and encyclopedia at the Leiden University, for which he gave the inaugural speech De Wetenschap der Nachbarigheid (The Science of Justice) on January 14, 1880 .

He was rector of the Alma Mater from September 1902 to December of the same year , and resigned his university post, since he was a member of the Second Chamber of the States General from 1902 to 1906 . During that time, however, he worked as a private lecturer in legal philosophy. In addition, he was active from March 7, 1904 to November 15, 1906 as a member of the Leiden municipal council. After he had resumed his university teaching post for health reasons in 1907, he retired on July 10, 1923 and retired on September 17, 1923.

Vlugt was a co-founder of the Association for Legal Philosophy, the magazine Onze Eeuw (Our Century), in 1899 the Leiden People's House and on November 19, 1891 the People's Reading Room (later the Leiden People's Library). Since 1887 he was also a member of the Dutch Protests League in Utrecht, a member of the Leiden Debating Society, 1901 a member of the Society of Christianity and Women, and a member of the general Dutch Federation Vrede door Recht . In addition, on August 31, 1907, he became a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion , a member of the Society for Dutch Literature in Leiden and on May 4, 1908, he became a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences in Amsterdam.

Vlugt married on August 3, 1882 in Leiden Anna Rauwenhoff (born November 22, 1862 in Leiden, † October 8, 1939 in Tongeren), the daughter of the professor of theology Lodewijk Willem Ernst Rauwenhoff and his wife Francina Felicia Tobias. There are children from the marriage. We know of these:
