Willfried Spohn

Willfried Spohn (born December 6, 1944 , † January 16, 2012 ) was a German sociologist .

Spohn studied sociology, political science, history and evangelical theology in Tübingen and Berlin from 1964 to 1970 . He received his doctorate in 1976 from the Free University of Berlin with a historical topic on world market competition and the industrialization of Germany from 1870 to 1914 . In 1984 there was his habilitation with the text Sociology and History - Critique of the Controversy between Edward P. Thompson and Perry Anderson . Between 1970 and 1984 he worked as an assistant, assistant professor and private lecturer at the Institute for Sociology at the Free University of Berlin.

Spohn had stays as a fellow and lecturer at various US universities and from 1999 to 2001 at the European University Institute in Florence. He was then head of research in the EURONAT project, which is based at the European University Viadrina Frankfurt-Oder. A substitute professorship led Spohn to Berlin in 2004 and a visiting professorship at the University of Eichstätt in 2006 . Most recently, he was head of the chair for social and economic sciences at the Willy Brandt Center for German and European Studies at the University of Breslau .

Spohn worked on the sociology of religion , the sociology of nationalism and groups . He was vice-president of Workgroup 02 Historical and Comparative Sociology of the International Sociological Association .

Spohn died in a car accident. He was buried in the Lichterfelde cemetery in Berlin. He was the brother of the mathematical physicist Herbert Spohn and the philosopher and scientific theorist Wolfgang Spohn .
