Life

Ost, a businessman by profession, joined the Oberland Freikorps in 1922 . At the beginning of November 1928 he became a member of the NSDAP ( membership number 102.818) and joined the SS in March 1931 (membership number 6.518). With the SS, Ost rose to SS-Standartenführer in November 1942. East was unemployed between 1931 and 1933. In 1933 he was an adjutant on the staff of the 43rd SS squadron. From the end of 1937, Ost completed a course at the SD leadership school in Bernau. Thereafter, Ost belonged to the staff of the SS Upper Section Southeast as a personnel officer until November 1938 and was then administrative officer there until the beginning of July 1939. He then became a staff leader under Fritz Katzmann in SS Section VI.

During the Second World War , from July 1941 to April 1943, Ost was the staff leader of Fritz Katzmann , the SS and police leader in the Galicia district based in Lemberg (Lwow). In this capacity, Ost, then with the rank of SS-Obersturmbannführer, was Katzmann's agent responsible for organizing the persecution of Jews in his area of responsibility. He worked closely with Friedrich Hildebrand .

After Katzmann's departure, Ost, who had held the rank of Sturmbannführer (F) of the Waffen-SS since July 1941 , took over the post of SS and Police Leader in Lemberg on a provisional basis, before Theobald Thier officially succeeded Katzmann in August 1943 . From July 1943, East was a member of the staff of the Upper Section East. SS leader Maximilian von Herff assessed Ost in May 1943 as follows: Appearance somewhat soft, willing, courteous. More head of the personal office than chief of staff. Own design and own views little available. Purely passive person.
