Willi Schmidt (politician)

Willi Schmidt (born April 16, 1934 in Althornbach ) is a former German elementary school teacher and politician of the SPD . From 1979 to 1996 he was a member of the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament .

Life and work

Schmidt attended elementary and secondary school, which he graduated with middle school leaving certificate. In 1951 he began his apprenticeship as a lathe operator, which he completed three years later with the skilled worker examination. He worked in this profession until 1959, when he successfully passed the industrial foreman examination. He was a technical employee until 1966, and from 1961 he also completed training and further education at REFA , followed by training as a contract teacher. From 1967 until he moved into the state parliament in 1979, Schmidt worked as a primary school teacher, he was also a REFA teacher and attended a seminar for choir leaders.

politics

Schmidt joined the SPD in 1970, for which he had already been elected to the Althornbach municipal council the year before. At first he held the office of alderman on a voluntary basis, from 1973 to 1997 he was mayor of the community. In addition, for a long time he was chairman of the local SPD association, the Pirmasens district association and the Pirmasens - Zweibrücken sub-district of the SPD, as well as a member of the district committee and the state committee. In addition, he belonged to the working group of the B-communities of the Pfalzwerke AG , as well as the supervisory board of the Landsiedlung Rheinland-Pfalz GmbH, the board of trustees of the University of Kaiserslautern and the union for education and science .

In the state elections in 1979 , Schmidt ran for the state parliament and initially missed the move. However , when Klaus von Dohnanyi waived his mandate , he was allowed to move up. In 1983 and 1987 he managed to move back in, and in the 1991 election he won the direct mandate in the constituency of Pirmasens-Land . After the 1996 election, he left the state parliament. In the state parliament he was deputy chairman of the committee for agriculture, viticulture and forestry as well as chairman of the working group of the SPD parliamentary group, also for these topics.

In 1994, Schmidt was a member of the 10th Federal Assembly , which Roman Herzog elected Federal President.

Honors

In 1990 Willi Schmidt was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon. In 1997 the Althornbach community made him an honorary citizen.
