Willi Warncke (born May 22, 1902 , † October 1943 in the Mediterranean ) was a German communist resistance fighter against National Socialism , a prisoner in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp and a victim of the Nazi regime .

Life

Warncke earned his living as an employee after attending primary school . He joined the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) and was active against the emerging National Socialism . After the transfer of power to the NSDAP in 1933, he continued his political resistance illegally . When the Gestapo became aware of this, he was arrested and sentenced to imprisonment by a court and then transferred to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. At the end of the 1930s he was released from the concentration camp together with the Hamburg communists Bernhard Bästlein , Franz Jacob , Robert Abshagen , Gustav Bruhn , Camillo Friede , Rudolf Klug , Franz Reetz , Adolf Wendt , Hein Bretschneider and Hans Christoffers . He now worked as an employee in the warehouse department of a Hamburg company. After the beginning of the Second World War he found a connection to the resistance group “ Bästlein-Jacob-Abshagen ”, which helped the persecuted and supported foreign forced laborers . When a comrade had to hide from the Gestapo , Warncke granted him an overnight stay in one of his warehouses. Thanks to his help, Franz Jacob, who was on the run, was able to hide from the Gestapo for a month.

In the course of the war, Warncke, who had been declared “ unworthy of defense ”, was drafted into the penalty battalion 999 and was deployed in the Mediterranean area, where he died in October 1943.
