William Addison (chess player)

William Grady Addison (born November 28, 1933 in Baton Rouge , Louisiana , † October 29, 2008 in San Francisco ) was an American chess player .

Addison was one of the strongest chess players in the United States in the 1960s. He took part in the US championships five times and finished second behind Samuel Reshevsky in 1969/70 . He also represented the United States at the Chess Olympiads in 1964 in Tel Aviv and in 1966 in Havana , where he in 1966 with the team came second. In 1967 he was awarded the title of International Master . Addison played his last and most important individual tournament at the Palma de Mallorca interzonal tournament in 1970 . There he finished 19th. After that, he retired from tournament chess and concentrated on his professional career in banking. In San Francisco, from 1965 to 1969, he headed the Mechanics' Institute Chess Club , the oldest still existing chess club in the USA.

When FIDE introduced the Elo rating in July 1971 , Addison was listed with a rating of 2490, which did not change due to his retirement from tournament chess. Its highest historical rating was given for February 1963 with a value of 2595.
