William I. Adolph von Hassell (born November 15, 1796 in Verden , † January 27, 1865 in Hanover ) was a royal Hanoverian lieutenant general and hippologist .

Life

William von Hassell came from the local noble family of the von Hassell . He was the son of the royal Hanoverian major general Franz Wilhelm von Hassell (1752-1827), landlord on Clüversborstel , today a district of Reeßum , and his first wife Luise von Wersebe . William Adolph inherited the estate in 1827 and had a new manor house built.

From October 5, 1811 to April 1, 1813, von Hassell was a student at the Knight Academy in Lüneburg . He later rose to major general in his military career .

Von Hassell was the President of the Royal Hanoverian Remonte Commission and a prominent hippologist in his day, who is to be counted among the formative figures in the breeding history of the modern Hanoverian .

The "old Hassell" was known everywhere in the country where horse breeding was practiced and exercised the best influence on them as on the army's horse replacement (Ulrich von Hassell senior, nephew 2nd degree of William von Hassell)

William von Hassell died on January 27, 1865. King George V of Hanover also attended his funeral. He found his grave in the Hassell family crypt in Sottrum ( reburied in 2012).
