William Beauchamp, 1st Baron Bergavenny
William Beauchamp, 1st Baron Bergavenny (* between 1330 and 1340; † May 8, 1411 ) was an English nobleman .
He was a younger son of Thomas de Beauchamp, 11th Earl of Warwick from his marriage to Katherine Mortimer .
In 1376 King Edward III took him . as a Knight Companion in the Order of the Garter . In 1383 he was captain of the city fortress Calais .
In the childless death of his maternal relative, John Hastings, 3rd Earl of Pembroke , he received the Honor and Lordship of Abergavenny in Monmouthshire , including Abergavenny Castle, from his estate in 1389 . In 1392 he was appointed to Parliament by King Richard II's Writ of Summons and thereby elevated to hereditary Baron Bergavenny . In 1399 he held the offices of Justiciars of South Wales and Governor of Pembroke . On the occasion of the threat from the rebellion of Owain Glyndŵr , he had Abergavenny Castle reinforced with a new gatehouse around 1400 .
According to his will, he was to be buried in the Dominican monastery in Hereford .
From his marriage to Lady Joan FitzAlan (1375–1435), daughter of Richard FitzAlan, 11th Earl of Arundel , he had two children:
- Elizabeth Beauchamp († 1430) ⚭ James Butler, 4th Earl of Ormonde ;
- Richard Beauchamp, 1st Earl of Worcester , 2nd Baron Bergavenny (around 1397–1422).
