William Douglas of Douglas († 1213)
William of Douglas († around 1213) was a Scottish nobleman . He is the first historically documented member of Clan Douglas .
It is first documented when he is mentioned in a document of Jocelin, Bishop of Glasgow (officiated 1175-1199), as a witness present, with which this confirmed the monks of the monastery Kelso , rights to the castle chapel of Peebles Castle . He is in the certificate “Will. de Doufglaß "called; the suffix shows that he and the feudal barony of Douglas in Lanarkshire invested had been, after his family called henceforth. This barony was created in 1177 at the latest.
The name of his wife is not known. She was believed to be the sister of the Freskin of Kerdal of Clan Murray . William left seven children:
- Archibald (before 1183 – around 1240), Laird of Douglas, ⚭ Margaret, daughter of Sir John of Crawford ;
- Brice († 1222), Bishop of Moray ;
- Alexander († after 1237), canon in Spynie , vicar of Elgin ;
- Henry († after 1239), canon in Spynie;
- Hugh († after 1238), canon in Spynie, archdeacon of Moray;
- Fresin († 1232), Dean of Moray;
- Margaret ⚭ Hervey de Keith .
William had died in 1214 at the latest when his eldest son Archibald had inherited him and was first documented as "Archibald of Douglas".
