William Dugdale, 2nd Baronet

Sir William Dugdale, 2nd Baronet CBE MC DL (born March 29, 1922 - † November 13, 2014 ) was a British nobleman and sports official.

Life and career

William Stratford Dugdale came from a family of English gentry . He was born on March 29, 1922, the elder son of William Francis Dugdale, who had been raised to Baronet , of Merevale and Blyth in the County of Warwick , in 1936, and Margaret Gilmour.

He studied law at Balliol College of Oxford University . During the Second World War he served in the Grenadier Guards from 1939 to 1945 and rose to the rank of captain. Because of his bravery, especially when landing at Anzio , he was awarded the Military Cross (MC) in 1943. After completing his legal training, he was admitted to the bar (solicitor) in 1949. In 1968 he switched to business as director of Phoenix Insurance , then went into water management and was initially chairman of the Severn-Trent Water Authority from 1974 to 1983 , at the same time a member of the National Water Council . He was then director and chairman of General Utilities PLC (Public Limited Company) from 1988 to 1999 .

Activity as a sports manager

William Dugdale took over the post of director of the Aston Villa Football Club in the early 1970s . Aston Villa was then a moderately successful club in the 3rd English Division. Because of the success of the association under his leadership, he became chairman in 1975. The highlight of his work at Aston Villa was winning the European Cup in the 1981/1982 season when Aston Villa beat Bayern Munich 1-0 in the final . Then William Dugdale resigned as chairman in 1982.

Political activity and honorary positions

In addition to his economic and sporting activities, William Dugdale was also a local politician. So he was from 1956 to 1999 Conservative member of Warwickshire County Council . From 1951 to 1997 he was also Justice of the Peace (JP) of the county. He also held the honorary posts of high sheriff of Stratford on Avon and high sheriff of Warwickshire. In 1965 he inherited the title of baronet when his father died. Furthermore, the Queen appointed him Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 1982 .

William Dugdale was married twice and has six children from both marriages. He died on November 13, 2014.
