William Edward Miller (composer)

William Edward Miller (born June 1, 1766 in Doncaster , † November 12, 1839 in Sheffield ) was a British violinist , composer and Methodist clergyman .

Life

Miller was a student of his father, the composer Edward Miller , and of Johann Baptist Cramer . Before settling in Sheffield, he lived in India for six years . He was considered by many to be England's greatest violinist of his time. An Indian prince gave him a Stradivarius as a present.

In 1799 he became a clergyman at Wesleyan Church and gave up playing the violin entirely. He composed numerous chorales , none of which are in use today.

Miller was the maternal great grandfather of Ernest Hemingway .
