William Ernest Hocking
William Ernest Hocking (born August 10, 1873 in Cleveland ( Ohio ), † June 12, 1966 in Madison (New Hampshire) ) was an American theologian and philosopher.
Life
Hocking was born in Cleveland, Ohio. As a teenager he had during a Methodist meeting an inner experience that made him to Christianity converted . In 1904 he received his doctorate in philosophy from Harvard University and taught there until he retired in 1943.
In 1921, Hocking was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , 1943 to the American Philosophical Society, and 1947 to the American Academy of Arts and Letters .
