William F. Barrett
Sir William Fletcher Barrett (born February 10, 1844 in Kingston , Jamaica , † May 26, 1925 in London ) was an English physicist .
He was born in Jamaica because his father, William Garland Barrett, was an amateur naturalist there. In 1848 the family returned to England.
He discovered Stalloy , a silicon-iron alloy used in electrical engineering. He has also done research on the dowsing rod . In addition, he used gas flames to demonstrate the existence of sound waves that cannot be registered by the human ear. Barrett was Professor of Physics at Dublin University .
In 1874 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh . In 1899 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of London .
