William Fleming

William Fleming (born July 6, 1736 in Cumberland County , Colony of Virginia , †  February 15, 1824 in Chesterfield County , Virginia ) was an American lawyer and politician . In 1779 he was a delegate for Virginia to the Continental Congress .

Career

In 1763, William Fleming graduated from the College of William & Mary . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career. Between 1772 and 1775 he was a member of the colonial House of Burgesses of Virginia. In the 1770s he joined the revolutionary movement. In 1775 and 1776 he took part as a delegate at various revolutionary meetings in Virginia. From 1776 to 1778 he sat in the House of Representatives from Virginia , in 1779 he represented this state in the Continental Congress.

In 1788 Fleming was appointed judge on the General Court of Virginia and in 1789 he was appointed judge on the Supreme Court of Appeals . He stayed there until his death. From 1809 he was President of this court and thus Chief Justice of Virginia. He died on February 15, 1824 at his Summerville manor in Chesterfield County.
