William Garner Sutherland (born March 27, 1873 in Portage County , Wisconsin , United States , † September 24, 1954 in Pacific Grove , Monterey County , California , United States) was a pioneer in the field of osteopathy . He was a student of Andrew Taylor Still and developed cranial osteopathy, which John E. Upledger expanded into cranio-sacral therapy .

Life

In 1898, Sutherland began studying osteopathy at the American School of Osteopathy and completed his training in 1900. For the next few decades, Sutherland also carried out self-experiments in the cranial area and published the book "The Cranial Bowl" in 1939, in which he postulated the mobility of the cranial bones and introduced the term PRM (Primary Respiratory Mechanism). In 1951 the book "Osteopathy in the Cranial Field" was published by Harald I. Magoun, a colleague of Sutherland, to which Sutherland wrote the preface and which was dedicated to him. This book was the first to describe cranial osteopathy as a therapy in the form of a textbook.
