William H. Gross

William "Bill" Hunt Gross (born April 13, 1944 ) is an American fund manager and founder of the Pacific Investment Management Company, LLC (PIMCO).

Life

Bill Gross studied psychology at Duke University in Durham (North Carolina) , which he left in 1966 with a bachelor's degree . After serving in the Navy , he earned an MBA from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1971 . He financed his studies as a professional blackjack player in Las Vegas .

In 1971 he founded Pacific Investment Management Company, LLC (PIMCO). He managed the PIMCO Total Return Fund, which, with a volume of $ 236 billion, is the world's largest bond fund and the fifth largest fund overall. In November 1999, PIMCO was sold to Allianz Global Investors for $ 3.3 billion , but Gross retained an influential position at PIMCO.

With a personal fortune of 2.1 billion US dollars, Bill Gross was ranked 564th on Forbes' list of the richest people in the world in March 2011 .

After Gross was successful for a long time, his fund outperformed the market for three consecutive years from 2011 onwards. On September 26, 2014, Pimco announced that Bill Gross would be leaving the company with immediate effect. He worked for the asset manager Janus Capital Group between September 29, 2014 and February 2019 ; in February 2019 he announced that he was giving up all posts.

Pimco pays Gross 81 million dollars in compensation for the separation, which Gross wants to donate to charity.
