William Hickley Gross CSsR (born June 12, 1837 in Baltimore , Maryland , † November 14, 1898 , ibid) was an American clergyman and Archbishop of Oregon City .

Life

William Hickley Gross joined the Congregation of the Redemptorists in and put on 4 April 1858, the vows from. On March 21, 1863, he received the sacrament of ordination .

Pope Pius IX appointed him Bishop of Savannah on February 14, 1873 . He received his episcopal ordination from the Archbishop of Baltimore , James Roosevelt Bayley , on April 27 of the same year; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Wilmington , Thomas Andrew Becker , and the Bishop of Richmond , James Gibbons . As a motto , he chose Sentiant Omnes Tuum Juvamen ( Let everyone know your help ) from an old Marian hymn.

Still in his episcopal ordination he laid on November 19, the foundation stone for the new Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help ( Our Lady of Perpetual Help ) on Lafayette Square.

On March 31, 1885, Pope Leo XIII appointed him . to Archbishop of Oregon City .
