William H. Milliken

William H. Milliken (born August 19, 1897 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , †  July 4, 1969 in Ridley Park , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1959 and 1965 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1906, William Milliken came to Sharon Hill where he attended public schools. He then graduated from the Drexel Institute in Philadelphia. In the following years he was a foreman in the construction industry and then sales manager of cement company Whitehall Cement Manufacturing Co . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He was a deputy in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and then usher in Delaware County . Between 1948 and 1959 he was the mayor of Sharon Hill.

In the 1958 congressional election , Milliken was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the seventh constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Benjamin F. James on January 3, 1959 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1965 . This period was marked by the events of the Cold War and the civil rights movement . In addition, the Vietnam War began at that time .

In 1964, William Milliken declined to run again. He died on July 4, 1969 in Ridley Park.
