São Simão is a former municipality in Portugal .

history

A settlement already existed here during the time of Roman occupation.

The present-day localities probably emerged here during the course of resettlement after the Reconquista in the late 12th and early 13th centuries.

In 1555 São Simão became an independent municipality.

With the territorial reform in 2013, the municipality of São Simão was dissolved and merged with the two municipalities of Nisa, Nossa Senhora da Graça and Espírito Santo .

Culture and sights

Today (as of July 2013) the community has three recognized architectural monuments . All three are sacred buildings , including the parish church Igreja Paroquial de São Simão do Pé da Serra or just Igreja de São Simão . It goes back to the first parish church, built around 1555, which was destroyed by Spanish troops in 1811 and later rebuilt.
