Tolosa is a small town ( Vila ) and municipality in Portugal .

history

The place was created in the course of the settlement policy at the end of the Portuguese Reconquista , when the young Kingdom of Portugal took large parts of the Alentejo from the Moors . King Sancho I gave the local area to the Knights Templar in 1199 . The Templars settled here mainly settlers from southern France, who named the villages that were created here after French places, including Tolosa (after Toulouse ). The name of the district town Nisa (from Nice , French: Nice ) probably originated in this way, as well as names of other municipalities in the district, such as Montalvão (from Montauban ) and Arez (from Arles ).

Tolosa became an independent district in the 13th century and received its own city rights in 1262 , which were renewed by King Manuel I in 1517 . In 1836 the Tolosa district was dissolved and Alpalhão was incorporated . With the dissolution of the Alpalhão district, Tolosa became a municipality in the Crato district in 1895 , and has belonged to Nisa since 1898 .

Culture and sights

The Queijo mestiço de Tolosa

The local cheese specialty, the semi-hard semi-hard cheese Queijo mestiço de Tolosa , made from goat and sheep milk is well known . Usually the Feira do Queijo is celebrated in the village every year in May , a combination of a product show of local cheese production and a folk festival, with music performances, local specialties (including wine tastings) and regional handicrafts .

The town's monuments include the bridge over the Ribeira de Sor river , the two-story primary school building, and the clock tower, along with various sacred buildings . Worth mentioning is the parish church Igreja Paroquial de Tolosa , built in the 17th century by Pedro Nunes Tinoco , which is also called Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação (German: Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation ) after its patron saint .
