Montalvão is a small town ( Vila ) and municipality in Portugal .
history
The place was created in the course of the settlement policy at the end of the Portuguese Reconquista , when the young Kingdom of Portugal took large parts of the Alentejo from the Moors . King Sancho I gave the local area to the Knights Templar in 1199 . The Templars settled here mainly settlers from the south of France, who named the villages that were created here after French places, including Montalvão (from Montauban ). The name of the district town Nisa (from Nice , French: Nice ) was probably created in this way, as did the names of other municipalities in the district, such as Arez (from Arles ) and Tolosa (from Toulouse ).
King D Dinis had a castle built here in the 13th century, based on the fortifications that already existed here.
Montalvão received city rights in 1512 by King Manuel I.
It remained the seat of an independent district until it was dissolved in 1834 and incorporated into the Nisa district.
Culture and sights
Among the monuments of the municipality are the medieval castle Castelo de Montalvão , the bullring opened in 1933 (Portuguese: Praça de Touros ), and the two-storey primary school building. A number of sacred buildings in the parish are also listed, including the parish church Igreja Paroquial de Montalvão , also called Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios (English: Church of Our Lady of Remedies) after its patron saint . The three-aisled church was built as a Gothic building from the end of the 13th century to the beginning of the 14th century and, after renovations, especially in the 16th century, shows features of the Baroque and Mannerism , such as in the altarpieces .
The historic town center is also a listed building as a whole.
