Arez (officially, occasionally also Arêz or Arês ) is a small town ( Vila ) and former municipality in Portugal .

history

The place was created in the course of the settlement policy at the end of the Portuguese Reconquista , when the young Kingdom of Portugal took large parts of the Alentejo from the Moors . King Sancho I gave the local area to the Knights Templar in 1199 . The Templars settled here mainly settlers from southern France, who named the villages that were created here after French places, including Arez (from Arles ). The name of the district town Nisa (from Nice , French: Nice ) probably originated in this way, as well as names of other municipalities in the district, such as Montalvão (from Montauban ) and Tolosa (after Toulouse ).

Arez became an independent district in the 13th century, until the administrative reforms after the liberal Miguelistenkrieg in 1834. As a result, it was dissolved in 1836 and has since been a municipality of the Nisas district.

With the territorial reform of 2013, the municipality of Arez was dissolved and merged with Amieira do Tejo into a new municipality.

Culture and sights

Various sacred buildings are among the monuments of the community . In addition to chapels, a stone cross and the parish church, the single-nave Igreja da Misericórdia de Arez, probably built in 1618, should be mentioned with its Renaissance portal, wooden ceilings and the Mannerist altarpiece of the main altar.
