William Henry Evered Poole CB , CBE , DSO (born October 8, 1902 in Caledon , South Africa , † March 9, 1969 in Bellville , South Africa) was a South African military and ambassador .

Life

William Henry Evered Poole studied at St. Andrew's College (South Africa) in Grahamstown , at Diocesan College Rondebosch . In 1921 he joined the Union Defense Force . After training at the South African Military College , he became a professional soldier in 1923. In 1934 Poole was given command of the Special Service Battalion . In 1935 he was seconded to the Brigade of Guards and moved to England on a military maneuver . In 1939 he became commander of the South African Military College . In 1940 he was promoted to the General Staff as an officer. From June 1941 to 1942 he was in command of the 2nd Infantry Brigade (South Africa) , which at that time was deployed in Marsa Matruh and on the Gazala line during the Theseus operation. From 1943 to 1945 he was Major General of the 6th Armored Division (South Africa) in North Africa and Italy.

In 1948 he headed the South African military mission in Berlin . In 1949 he was Ministre plénipotentiaire in Rome and in 1950 he also headed the Mission of the South African Union in Cologne-Riehl . In 1951 wr was head of the mission in Cairo . In 1952 he led the mission in Buenos Aires and was also accredited to the government of Carlos Ibáñez del Campo in Santiago de Chile .

From 1961 to 1963 he was ambassador to Athens . In 1963 he was retired.
