William Mackenzie, 1st Baron Amulree

William Warrender Mackenzie, 1st Baron Amulree , GCB , KBE , PC , KC (born August 19, 1860 in Scone , Perth and Kinross , Scotland , † May 5, 1942 ) was a British lawyer and Labor Party politician who , among others was Secretary of State for Air between 1930 and 1931 .

Life

Mackenzie, son of Robert Mackenzie and Jean Campbell Menzies, began after school to study law at the University of Edinburgh , which he completed in 1885 with a Master of Arts (MA). In 1886 he received his legal admission as a barrister at the Bar Association ( Inns of Court ) from Lincoln's Inn . For his legal services he was appointed Crown Attorney (King's Counsel) in 1914 . In 1917 he was first appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) and in 1918 he was made Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE), so that from then on he carried the suffix "Sir". In the following years he was from 1918 to 1919 chairman of the Interim Court of Arbitration and 1919 government-appointed arbitrator for the Electoral (Supply) Act 1919 . He then served as President of the Industrial Court between 1919 and 1926 and as Chairman of the National Wages Board for Railways from 1920 to 1926 .

Mackenzie, who was inducted into the Order of the Bath (GCB) as the Knight Grand Cross in 1926, was chairman of a business delegation during a trip to the USA and Canada between 1926 and 1927 . In 1927 he served as Chairman of the Interministerial Committee for the opening hour law (Shop Hours Act 1927) . On July 22, 1929, he was as Baron Amulree , of Strathbraan in the County of Perth in the hereditary nobility of the Peerage of the United Kingdom raised and belonged until his death in the upper house ( House of Lords ) as a member. In the second government of Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald he held the post of Secretary of State for Air as the successor to Christopher Thomson, 1st Baron Thomson from October 14, 1930 to August 25, 1931 . On 18 October 1930 he was also a member of the Secret Privy Council (Privy Council) . In 1933 he served as chairman of the Royal Commission on Newfoundland . In 1936 the University of Edinburgh awarded him an honorary doctorate in law (Honorary Doctor of Law) .

His only son, Basil William Sholto Mackenzie, emerged from his marriage to Lilian Bradbury on June 1, 1897 , who inherited the title of 2nd Baron Amulree after his death on May 5, 1942.
