Sir William Maxwell, 1st Baronet (* around 1635 - † April 1709 ), was a Scottish nobleman and large landowner.

He was the second son of William Maxwell, from his marriage to Margaret McCulloch of Myretown. He belonged to the Maxwell clan and was a great-great-great-great-great-great-grandson of a younger son of 1st Lord Maxwell .

After his father in 1670, his older brother John in 1668 and his only son William in 1671, he inherited his parents' lands in and around Monreith in Wigtownshire , including the Myrton Castle family estate from his mother's estate .

On January 8, 1681 he was awarded the hereditary title of Baronet , of Monreith in the County of Wigtown, in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia .

He was married twice, first to Joanna McDouall, daughter of Patrick McDouall of Logan, and after her death in second marriage to Elizabeth Hay, daughter of Thomas Hay of Park (1616-1683). From his second marriage he had eight children:

  • Isabel Maxwell, ⚭ William Stewart, of Castle Stewart († after 1713)
  • Mary Maxwell († 1767), ⚭ Thomas Hay, of Park († 1733)
  • two more daughters who died young
  • William Maxwell († 1707)
  • Sir Alexander Maxwell, 2nd Baronet († 1730), ⚭ Lady Jean Montgomerie
  • John Maxwell, ⚭ Mary McGhie
  • Elizabeth Maxwell, ⚭ Andrew Heron, of Bargaly († 1730)

When he died in April 1709, his eldest son William had drowned in the River Nith in 1707 , so his son Alexander inherited him as 2nd baronet.
