William MacGuckin de Slane
William MacGuckin de Slane , also known as Mac Guckin and MacGuckin , known as Baron de Slane (born August 12, 1801 in Belfast , County Antrim , United Kingdom ; died August 4, 1878 in Paris , France ) was a French Orientalist of Irish descent .
He was a student of Silvestre de Sacy (1758-1838) and teacher of Jean-François Champollion . He acquired French citizenship on December 31, 1838 and was appointed chief interpreter of the French Africa troops for Arabic on September 1, 1846 , a position he held until his retirement on March 28, 1872. He is known for his extensive translations of Arabic literature. He made a contribution to the translation of the biographical dictionary of Ibn Challikān and the history of the Berbers (Histoire des Berbères et des dynasties musulmanes de l'Afrique septentrionale) and the Muqaddima (universal history) of Ibn Chaldūn . He was a councilor of the Asian Society .
